Enis Batur, who with his original observations concerning society has brought as many different points of view to the social life of Turkey as any writer, with “House of Books” or “Bookstore” presents to the reader an example of an extraordinary essay-novel that cries out to be read in a single sitting. In the book, the writer has chosen to transmit his thoughts relating to books/libraries via a novelistic “fiction.” The book which is the true hero of the novel is the work of an unnamed person who deals with the book itself from its collection to its architecture; this book is bequeathed to a library by a book lover and takes the reader on an unparalleled journey in the world of books. At the end of the novel, we see that this journey does not end with the book’s last page, that our journey with the book and the book’s world can continue for a lifetime if we wish.
